350g male Sprague Dowley rats are an appropriate size model for learning microvascular technique. The rats are anesthetized with intraperitoneal pentabarbital, and anesthesia is maintained with repeated doses as needed. A dosing record is kept next to the animal.

When working with the femoral vessels, only the hind limbs are secured with masking tape. The rat's pectoral girdle does not allow splaying out the forelimbs without compromising respiration.
