The phrenic nerve descends diagonally across the anterior scalene to enter the chest medial to the border of the first rib.

The subclavian vein (see subclavian vein access ) crosses the first rib just anterior to the insertion of the anterior scalene muscle. Note the depth of the vein from the frontal plane of the body. The internal jugular vein (see Seldinger technique ) lies beneath the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
