There was minimal blood in the splenorenal recess (see spleen anatomy.) If the patient was unstable, FAST (focused abdominal ultrasound for trauma) exam would have been the diagnostic procedure of choice rather than CT scan. Evaluation of the splenorenal recess would have been negative.

The hepatorenal recess (Morrison’s pouch) might have been seen as positive on FAST exam.
