If the base is friable or gangrenous, it can be left open and secured by inversion and cecal purse string suture. The stump should not be both ligated and inverted because of the risk of mucocoele and leaving a cecal mass that might later be mistaken for a tumor.

After local irrigation and checking the mesentery for hemostasis, the peritoneum is closed with continuous absorbable 4-0 suture material.
