The abdomen was opened through a midline incision and exploration revealed no evidence of metastases. The antrum was adherent to the underside of the liver (quadrate lobe, see liver anatomy). The greater omentum was separated from the transverse colon as the first step in performing a subtotal gastrectomy.

The gastrocolic omentum lies over and is often adherent to the transverse mesocolon (see total colectomy and J-pouch.)
