The bowel was opened and the lesion had a smooth surface with intact mucosa and an umbilicated center. The pathologic diagnosis was gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) with low malignant potential.
The specimen is shown beside the X-ray. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are rare non-epithelial cell tumors arising from cells in the wall of stomach and small bowel. They may show characteristics of neural or smooth muscle tissue when differentiated.
