The donor was positioned on a beanbag in the right lateral decubitus position, the table was broken and the kidney rest was raised. A small (6") incision was made over the left 11th rib.

The 11th rib was excised from its bed to provide clear access to the left kidney. The donor was given saline and albumin for volume, and mannitol to maintain renal perfusion until the time of harvest.

Blunt dissection was carried out in the retroperitoneal plane below the margin of the diaphragm. Gerota's fascia was identified and opened.
