The kidneys lie embedded in a cushioning layer of renal fat within the renal (Gerota's) fascia. The fascia encloses the kidneys anteriorly and posteriorly, extends across the midline, upward to enclose the adrenals, and downward to surround the ureters.

By bluntly pushing the peritoneum anteriorly on the left side, the renal fascia can be exposed and the renal vein followed all the way across the aorta.
