Mezzenbaum scissors were slid toward the superficial ring with the points pressed up against the underside of the external oblique to avoid injuring the ilioinguinal nerve. The points were opened at the superficial ring to separate the fascia from the underlying cord structures.

The slightly opened points were slid medially with the lower blade lifting the fascia to protect the nerve. The superficial ring was opened.
