Faced with these pressures, it is incumbent on us to streamline and increase our effectiveness in imparting the anatomic expertise that remains essential to good clinical practice. The first concept to reexamine is an essential truism that was well articulated by Leonardo 500 years ago. Anatomic education is a visual and tactile process. The conventional text-dominated media of the past is ineffectual in conveying the core body of anatomic knowledge.

We do have the ability to be effective teachers of anatomy. The strengths and weaknesses of our armamentarium deserve critical examination. Text is least effective in communicating structural concepts, while live experience is most effective. The other tools available to us can be used creatively and effectively.
