The external carotid passes between the stylohyoid and the two deeper muscles. The hypoglossal nerve passes between the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein, then passes lateral to both branches of the carotid, remaining deep to the stylohyoid muscle. The lower portion of its arc is just visible below the caudal border of the stylohyoid.
