Limited colonoscopy showed inflamed mucosa and membranes consistent with clostridium difficile colitis. When the patient showed no signs of improvement and became hemodynamically unstable after a short period of observation on high-dose antibiotics and anti-inflammatory, she was taken to the operating room for urgent subtotal colectomy.
