Accessory spleens are found with an incidence of 10-20% and are usually single. They are found in structures related to the embryonic dorsal mesogastrium: the splenic hilum and pedicle and greater omentum.
Accessory spleens become important in the surgical treatment of hematological disorders such as ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura). Missing such an accessory spleen could perpetuate the disorder.
