The splenocolic ligament is divided carefully using cautery scissors. As the attachments of the colon and stomach are divided, these organs fall medially and exposure is enhanced.
The posterior axillary line port is placed and the assistant retracts the lower pole of the spleen upward to expose the tail of the pancreas, the gastrosplenic ligament, the splenorenal ligament and the lower part of the splenic hilum.

The hilar vessels are successively isolated and clipped (double clips proximally). Alternatively, the vessels can be divided with two or three applications of a linear vascular stapler.
