The splenic artery takes a tortuous course above the border of the pancreas behind the posterior peritoneum of the lesser sac. Its dorsal and greater pancreatic branches supply the body and tail of the pancreas. Short gastric vessels arise from the hilar branches and run to the greater curve of the stomach. The left gastroepiploic artery arises from one of the lower hilar branches. The splenic artery lies in a groove along the posterior upper border of the pancreas.
