The splenic artery was isolated above the tail of the pancreas. A distal segment was selected to avoid devascularizing the distal body and tail of the pancreas.

The splenic artery was doubly ligated in continuity using 2-0 silk. This maneuver allows the spleen to decompress via the splenic vein, decreasing the bulk of the organ and risk of hemorrhage, and providing an autotransfusion of blood and platelets.
