A right hepatic artery that bows out toward the infundibulum of the gallbladder ("caterpillar hump": see biliary arterial anatomy and biliary variation) is a variation that can be mistaken for the cystic artery. Mistaken division of this vessel can lead to hepatic necrosis.
This schematic representation of the bowed right hepatic artery shows the proximity of the vessel to the infundibulum of the gallbladder (mobilized upward after division of the cystic duct and cystic arteries).
