The hepatic artery was followed proximally and the right gastric artery (already ligated), and gastroduodenal artery (isolated) were ligated and divided.

In addition to the right gastric and gastroduodenal arteries, the right gastric vein must be divided to free the distal end of the stomach. The right and left gastric (coronary) veins drain into the junction of splenic and portal vein. The left gastric runs in the retroperitoneum of the lesser sac and can be left undisturbed.

Freeing the hepatic artery from the head of the pancreas and stomach opened the space between the portal vein and the upper border of the neck of the pancreas.
