Surgery and radiotherapy are used to treat the local manifestations of breast cancer in the area of the chest and axilla. Surgery alone or the combination is determined by the stage and the nature of the disease.

DCIS is usually identified as a cluster of calcifications on mammogram and is diagnosed by core needle biopsy or needle localization biopsy (refer back to previous sections of this narrative). It is considered stage 0 and is treated locally.

It may be excised with a wide margin of tissue in a procedure called a lumpectomy (discussed later in this narrative). The axillary lymph nodes are not sampled because of the minimal risk of spread. Radiation of the breast is usually added because this has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of local recurrence. The combination of local excision and radiation is called breast conservation therapy.
