An overhead monitor displays continuous online hemodynamics including heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, pulmonary artery pressures and oxygen saturation. The patient is informed about the general risks of open heart surgery including death, stroke, kidney failure, infection, need for transfusion and arrhythmias. Depending on the age of the patient and co-morbidities (e.g. diabetes, lung disease) and the functional status of the left ventricle, the risk for an individual patient can be stratified.
