The aortic cross clamp is being removed to allow blood to flow back into the coronary arteries and allow the heart to beat once again. Sometimes the heart starts by itself and sometimes it starts with an irregular rhythm (ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation) and requires one or more shocks to convert it to a regular rhythm.

The heart has began to beat. Pacemaker wires are being placed in the heart. These allow the heart to be paced postoperatively in the event the heart slows too much.
