A loop of ileum was selected as close to the rectal anastomosis as possible, while leaving enough laxity to easily reach the skin. The loop was brought through an opening in the abdominal muscles, taking care to keep the orientation of the proximal and distal limb.
A small transverse opening was made in the distal limb at the level of the skin. The lower lipof the opening was sutured to a central point below the stoma.
