The superior cervical sympathetic ganglion is the largest of the three. It has an ascending cranial connection, the carotid nerve, that passes through the carotid foramen.

A neurological monitor was used to identify vagal involvement of the tumor by checking for recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation of the vocal cords. An endotracheal tube with special leads sensed vocal cord activation.
