The inferior thyroid artery was identified.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve was identified beneath the inferior thyroid artery. An inferior parathyroid gland was identified and was preserved on a vascular pedicle when the inferior thyroid artery was divided. The residual isthmus was sharply freed from the trachea and the gland was mobilized upward.
