A 30-year-old man complained of fullness in the throat on swallowing following tonsillectomy. There was a mass below the right angle of the mandible that was mobile in an anterior-posterior direction, but not longitudinally (see differential diagnosis of neck masses). CT scan showed a large mass posteromedial to the right carotid vessels from the bifurcation extending up toward the base of the skull.
In addition, there was a smaller mass between the left internal and external carotid arteries. The only laboratory abnormality was an elevated urinary catecholamines.
