The larger part of the lesion was mobilized from beneath the carotid vessels starting from the lower pole. The spinal accessory nerve was visualized.

The submaxillary gland was mobilized to increase exposure (see submandibular salivary gland resection). The facial vessels were tacked up to the underside of the superior flap to protect the marginal mandibular nerve (see parotidectomy).
