The closure of the subcutaneous/platysma layer is shown. The opertive field was perfectly dry and no drain was left. If a (closed suction) drain is placed, it is removed at 24 hrs.
The skin was closed with running 4-0 subcuticular monofilament suture. After any neck surgery, the wound must be carefully observed for any sign of hematoma that might compress the trachea and cause respiratory compromise. In such a case, the wound must be immediately opened. Circulating parathormone maintains calcium levels for 24-36 hours in the face of parathyroid compromise, so signs of hypocalcemia are delayed.
