The facial nerve emerges at the inferior border of the pons (see brain anatomy), travels through the facial canal in the petrous portion of the temporal bone and emerges from the stylomastoid foramen. The foramen can be located by following the groove between the tympanic portion of the temporal bone and the mastoid process. The nerve is at 6:00 in relation to the ear canal.
