The left inferior parathyroid was identified in the thymus by color change when the tip of the left lobe of the thymus was separated from the thyroid. The thymus was mobilized downward and preserved.

The strap muscles were separated from the thyroid and middle thyroid veins divided on both sides (see thyroidectomy).

The right thyroid lobe was mobilized (viewed from the patient's right, head to the left) and the recurrent laryngeal nerve was identified in the tracheoesophageal groove.
