The gland is next mobilized downward and posteriorly to expose the facial artery beneath its upper portion, often partially embedded in gland substance. If embedded, the artery is divided in two places, proximal and distal to the enwrapped section.

The posterior margin of the mylohyoid muscle is retracted anteriorly exposing the deep lobe of the gland and the submandibular duct. The deep portion is mobilized staying close to the gland and the duct is divided.

The excision is completed by dividing the fine fibers between the submandibular ganglion and the gland.
