A 56-year-old man presented with a one year history of dysphagia, regurgitating food and bad breath. Barium swallow showed a 5-cm Zenker's diverticulum.

The lateral film shows barium retained in the diverticulum between the esophagus and the vertebrae.

The upper esophageal sphincter consists of three broad constrictor muscles. The lower portion of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor is the cricopharyngeus muscle.
