The ansa cervicalis loops down on the anterior surface of the carotid sheath and innervates the strap muscles. It may be divided if necessary.

The cross-section of the neck shows the plane of dissection (dashed line): after the deep cervical and intermediate fascia was opened, the carotid sheath was mobilized laterally and the visceral compartment containing thyroid, trachea and esophagus was mobilized to the right. The retropharyngeal space, into which the diverticulum extends, lies between the pretracheal fascia surrounding the visceral compartment and the prevertebral fascia.
