A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Cricopharyngeal motor dysfunction is considered the etiology of Zenker's diverticulum. Inappropriate contraction during swallowing causes increased intrapharyngeal pressure. The pressure can cause mucosa and submucosa to protrude through the weak area of muscle between the cricopharyngeus and the remainder of the lower constrictor, forming a pulsion (false) diverticulum.
