Serious medical problems that are known or discovered during work-up are carefully assessed to determine the risk of surgery and to determine the best anesthetic technique to use. Consultation is obtained with specialists such as cardiologists as needed. There are few patients who are so seriously ill that they cannot have a hernia repaired with minimal risk.
There are a number of dedicated centers in this country and elsewhere which specialize in hernia surgery. The majority of hernia repairs are done by general surgeons who operate in full service hospitals. A surgeon operating in either environment can be equally qualified. It is perfectly appropriate to check if a particular surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Surgery by looking in the directory of medical specialists. It is also appropriate to ask the surgeon his experience, complication rate and recurrence rate. Both these latter should be in the 1-5% range. Personal recommendation is always good for additional reassurance.
