The gastrocolic omentum was opened toward the duodenum, and the right gastroepiploic vessels were divided.

The peritoneum was opened at the inferior border of the pancreas. The body of the pancreas was elevated to locate the splenic vein in its groove along the posterior, superior border of the gland.
