A plane could be developed deep to the nodal mass while following the phrenic nerve from above to avoid injury. The inferior aspect of the mass could be safely separated from the subclavian vein without resecting clavicle.

The operative field is shown at the end of the dissection. There was no residual induration or gross evidence of disease remaining in the field. The operation constituted a selective neck dissection.
