The Peritoneal Cavity: 1

The peritoneal cavity is a potential space between parietal and visceral peritoneum. The model of the parietal peritoneum is a CT scan reconstruction. The anterior parietal peritoneum reflects inward at the falciform ligament, a remnant of the ventral mesentery with the obliterated umbilical vein in its free edge. The domes of the diaphragm and the pelvic cavity are the most posterior parts of the peritoneal cavity. The posterior parietal peritoneum is invaginated to form the visceral peritoneum covering the abdominal organs and their mesenteries. The posterior parietal peritoneum is shaped by the vertebral column, iliopsoas muscles and retroperitoneal organs.

The great vessels of the abdomen lie atop the ridge of the lumbar vertebral bodies, and, in a thin individual, are only centimeters from the anterior abdominal wall. The iliac vessels diverge along the inner rim of the psoas muscles.  The psoas muscles make the rim of peritoneum in the inguinal region a thin cleft (see inguinal hernia repair).

The posterior parietal peritoneum reflects onto abdominal organs and mesenteries: 1 esophagus; 2 coronary ligaments of the liver around the bare area (see liver anatomy); 3 right colon ; 4 root of the small bowel mesentery; 5 rectum; 6 sigmoid mesentery (see sigmoid resection); 7 transverse mesocolon; 8 left colon (see total colectomy); 9 splenophrenic and splenorenal ligaments (see spleen anatomy).
