The cul-de-sac was opened and the rectovesical plane was developed. Note the cut edge of peritoneum on the rectum and the lengthening of the rectum out of the pelvis.

The middle rectal vessels (lateral stalks) were clamped, divided and ligated above the levators, staying close to the rectum to avoid injuring the ureters.
