The incision was marked extending from the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid down onto the sternum. The clavicle is outlined and a possible "trap door" extension is marked to the patient's right.

An upper sternotomy was made to expose the great vessels. The sternum separated easily, and a "T" extension was not necessary.
