The neck can be conceptually divided into three zones relative to access to the carotid artery. Zone I extends from the base of the neck to The cricoid cartilage. Zone II extends from zone I to the angle of the mandible, and zone III extends from the angle of the mandible to the base of the skull. Injuries in zone I often require median sternotomy for proximal control of the great vessels of the neck.
