The cystic duct can be short or long, have an abrupt or tapering junction with the gallbladder, and may form a wide opening with the common duct due to inflammation from an impacted stone (Mirrizzi's syndrome).

The cystic duct may join the right hepatic duct, an accessory duct, the bifurcation or the common duct. It may spiral and join posteriorly or on the left side.
