Ten percent of the time, there is a trifurcation (cannulated here in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma), with no right hepatic duct.

Fifteen percent of the time there is an accessory or replaced hepatic duct, invariably on the right side. It is usually joined by the cystic duct, or may drain into the cystic duct.
