The internal mammary artery (coming off the subclavian beneath the vein retractor) was identified and controlled.

The vertebral artery, which had been hidden by the aneurysm, was controlled. The patient was given 5000u of intravenous heparin, and after 5 minutes, the subclavian was clamped proximal and distal to the aneurysm using atraumatic vascular clamps.

A portion of the aneurysm wall was excised without endangering the vagus, and sent for pathology to try and determine the etiology.
