The genitofemoral nerve, a branch of the lumbar plexus, carries sensory fibers from L1 and L2. It penetrates the psoas muscle and divides into two branches. The femoral branch carries sensation from the upper anterior thigh. the genital branch carries sensation from the labia/scrotum and adjacent medial thigh. The next branch of the lumbar plexus, the lateral femoral cutaneous, carries sensory fibers from L2-3 and emerges from beneath the lateral edge of the psoas.
