The path of the graft and the AV fistula are shown schematically. The patient was kept on heparin for 48 hours and was started on coumidin to reach an INR of 2.0. He would be maintained on Coumadin for six months.  

Follow up: On the second post-operative day, the patient spiked a fever and there was no flow in the graft by Doppler ultrasound. Because of signs of sepsis and a potentially infected graft, the graft was removed without an attempt at embolectomy (see Discussion.)
