A 10-mm polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) ribbed graft was cut at a 45 degree angle at its non-ribbed end and brought into position for the right iliac vein anastomosis.

The patient was given 5,000 units of heparin. After 5 minutes, the iliac vein was controlled with vessel loops, and a nick was made with a #11 blade. The opening was lengthened to 2 cm using an angled Pott's scissors.
