The sigmoid mesentery was divided down to the rectosigmoid junction (indicated by the divergence of the taeniaee). The sigmoid vessels were divided, leaving the superior rectal to ensure adequate blood supply to the distal rectum (see lower GI bleed).

Proximal sigmoid was controlled with an atraumatic clamp, and the colon was divided distally at the rectosigmoid junction, using the transverse stapler. The specimen was removed from the field.
