The specimen was opened by pathology in the operating room. There was marked thickening of the colon wall at the site of the stricture, which corresponded with the site of the fistula. There was no mucosal lesion, indicating that this was probably an inflammatory rather than a neoplastic process.

The tip of a scissors could be introduced into the mucosal side of the fistula, but did not pass through the fistula site.
