Blue dye was introduced into the bladder via the catheter and the bladder was distended.

A white lap pad was placed in the pelvis behind the bladder and left in place for a minute while the bladder was distended with dye, and the catheter clamped. There was no evidence of staining on the pad. Because there was no active leak under pressure, it was elected not to resect bladder or oversew the fistula site.

The left colon was mobilized up to the splenic flexure, allowing the proximal end to reach easily to the rectal stump without tension.
