The branches of the brachial plexus are shown (see brachial plexus anatomy). The neurological deficit in this patient, predominantly deltoid weakness, pointed to the growth involving the axillary branch of the posterior cord.

The patient was taken to the operating room with multiple teams (oncologic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery) prepared to assist. The groins were prepped in case a vein graft was needed. The initial incision line is shown.

The axilla was opened through subcutaneous fat down to the edge of pectoralis major (beneath retractor) and the fascia enclosing the axillary fat pad (see axillary dissection).
